About Louise Mac Manus-Hunter
Experienced independent-school teacher and Head of Department, specialising in History, Politics, selective school entry & Oxbridge preparation.
Experience & Qualifications
I am an experienced History & Politics teacher with more than ten years’ experience in leading London independent schools. I am currently Head of History at St Catherine’s School Twickenham, having previously served as Head of History & Politics at Notting Hill & Ealing High School.
I have extensive experience preparing students for GCSE and A Level examinations, developing confident analytical writing, rigorous source evaluation skills and supporting academically ambitious students beyond the curriculum, including Oxbridge applications and History Admissions Test preparation.
My academic background includes a First Class (Hons) degree in War Studies from King’s College London, a PGCE with Merit in Secondary History from the University of Nottingham and a postgraduate qualification in Psychodynamic & Humanistic Counselling from Goldsmiths, University of London. My wider educational experience has included leading provision for highly able students, supervising the EPQ programme and mentoring early-career teachers.
Tutoring Approach
My approach is warm, encouraging and academically ambitious. I believe students make the strongest progress when they feel comfortable asking questions and making mistakes, while also being challenged to think carefully and aim high. Tuition is tailored to the individual: I identify gaps in knowledge and skills, set clear priorities and give purposeful feedback so that each session has a clear focus.
Alongside stronger subject knowledge and examination technique, I want students to become more confident and independent learners. Whether a student needs reassurance, greater structure or more intellectual challenge, my aim is to help them understand how to improve- and increasingly to recognise that for themselves.
